We see code changes instantly. Any delay between writing a piece of code and seeing the result is inhumane. It frustrates the mind and erodes patience. We demand frequent, rich feedback as we modify working systems. Fast feedback helps you work around problems.
Simple tools
We wield simple tools. A simple tool does one thing well. That's where it gets its power. We respect and master them. A small number of simple tools, and a master to employ them, can do a job safer, with higher quality, and faster, than a workshop full of complex tools.
Raw data
We work in the medium of data. We build information systems. Databases store data. APIs speak with data. Data streams over the network. We avoid needless abstractions and build systems to interpret and process data. We work with the grain of information instead of fighting against it.
Zero ops overhead
We outsource operations. Operations distract us from programming. We prefer not to maintain servers. Operations is a discipline of beauty and grace, but we prefer to build software. The modern stack has many opportunities to outsource operations and we take advantage of those whenever we can.
